SOS RACISME IS THE MOST DYNAMIC AND ORIGINAL ACTOR ON THE FRENCH POLITICAL SCENE TODAY. IT WAS CREATED IN THE FALL OF 1984 BY A GROUP OF YOUTHS IN A PARIS SUBURB WHO WERE FRUSTRATED BY THEIR INABILITY TO COUNTER THE RISE OF RACIST VIOLENCE IN FRANCE AND BY THE INCREASING ABILITY OF THE EXTREME RIGHT TO INITIATE AND FRAME FRENCH POLITICAL DISCUSSIONS. THIS ARTICLE EXAMINES HOW, IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF PUBLIC APATHY TOWARD EXISTING POLITICAL PARTIES AND UNIONS, SOS RACISME HAS MANAGED TO MOBILIZE PEOPLE IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMON PRINCIPLES OF ANTI-RACISM AND INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS. ITS UNIQUE MODES OF EXPRESSION RELY NEITHER ON RIGIDLY STRUCTURED ORGANIZATION NOR ON ANY SYSTEMATIC IDEOLOGY. SOS'S VISION OF A SEDUCTIVE, OPEN FRANCE IS ESSENTIALLY APOLITICAL IN ITS RHETORIC; IT IS A DIFFUSE APPEAL TO MORALS AND SOCIAL SOLIDARITY. WHILE THE MESSAGE MIGHT BE VAGUE, THE MOVEMENT'S SUCCESS IS NOT COUNTED IN TERMS OF MEMBERSHIP CARDS. INSTEAD, ITS IMPACT IS MEASURED BY JOURNALISTS WHO COUNT THE THOUSANDS WHO FLOCK TO SOS'S FREE ROCK CONCERTS AND CARNIVAL-LIKE DEMONSTRATIONS.*

Being active in politics. From the extreme left to the french socialist party : the political professionalisation of the founders of Sos-racisme Through an analysis of the militant careers of Julien Dray and the founders of SOS-Racisme, the article seeks to account first for the logic of their initial commitment within the [Trotskyite] LCR [Ligue communiste révolutionnaire], then for their investment in extreme-left student organizations and finally for their reasons for joining the Socialist Party. Passage from the extreme-left to the Socialist Party was caused on the one hand by the need – for a specific generation of student political cadres who entered politics in the post-1968 era and were over the age of 30 in 1983 – to obtain professional positions corresponding to their militant status, and on the other hand, by opportunities for promotion and new affiliations opened up by the Left's accession to power in 1981. The militant careers of these groups'members appear as a succession of conversions, both ideological and professional, which militants had to undergo in relation to the social spaces which they entered and of the opportunities provided by each new step in the process of accumulation of political resources.
